Web Applications Development Certificate

Ever wanted to develop an on-line shopping application, build a content management system, create database-enabled websites? Perhaps your business is ready to make its mark on the World Wide Web. Then maybe you've come to the right place, for here you can learn about the 10-point modules offered by the Faculty of Maths Computing and Technology.

The topics covered include:

  • The design, development and management of web applications
  • Client-side application development
  • Server-side application development
  • Databases within web applications
  • Open source software for web applications
  • Server administration, performance, and tuning

These are academic modules, not training courses. So whilst you'll encounter development tools such as JavaScript, ASP, PHP, and ColdFusion, the emphasis will always be on the broader issues of planning, designing, and managing. You'll learn something of the strengths and weaknesses of these various tools, you'll even be expected to use them within project work, but in the end the primary aim is to empower you to make decisions that matter.

The presentation schedule of the modules will permit students to complete the Certificate to two years. Details can be found via the FAQs page or the Start Dates page.

Update - January 2011

After a successful run of 9 years the Certificate in Web Applications is coming to a close. During those years the web has seen many changes and new developments and whilst the six modules have been regularly updated, it has been decided that a shift in emphasis is required. To this end the Certificate team has proposed the development of a 30-point, Level-2, module for first presentation in February 2012, with closer ties to other modules from the Maths, Computing and Technology Faculty.

Research Project

As part of the pre-development work for the new module we need to gather data about the basic knowledge and skills of our potential audience, which is where you as a current, or future, student of a TT*** module could make an invaluable contribution. We have put together a series of short activities linked to four key concepts in programming, namely: sequencing, variables, looping, and conditionals. Along with these activities is a survey to capture your feedback and some idea of your programming experience.

We appreciate the demands on your time, so as an incentive we will be awarding a few £10 vouchers to randomly selected participants. These vouchers can be used as part payment for any OU module fee.

Both the activities and the survey can be completed in stages, so before you get too deeply embroiled in your studies visit the project's home page at: http://norton.open.ac.uk/stepsGuide.html.
